Oggi voglio affrontare un tema più serio: l’Ethical Jewellery.

Il nuovo trend è la gioielleria etica, che per fortuna si sta sempre più diffondendo.

Chiunque, soprattutto in seguito al omonimo film uscito nel 2006, quando si parla di gioielleria etica pensa subito ai Blood Diamonds. Penso che ormai oggi come oggi tutti gli acquirenti siano consapevoli  e attenti per quanto riguarda l’acquisto di diamanti: vanno dunque a cercare diamanti certificati. Ma non so in quanti si pongano le stesse domande riguardo all’eticità della provenienza di oro  e pietre preziose.

Ultimamente ho letto diversi articoli e mi sono proprio appassionata al tema dell’ “Ethical Jewellery”. Dovete sapere che in passato ho studiato Bioetica, sono quindi ritornata ai miei vecchi studi!:-)

Il primo articolo che ho letto e di cui vi voglio consigliare la lettura è il seguente: “The Color of Responsibility: Ethical Issues and Solutions in Colored Gemstones” di Peer Reviewed Article e Jennifer-Lynn Archuleta, sulla rivista Gems & Gemology, Summer 2016, Vol. 52, No. 2.

Oggi la sensibilità è molto maggiore, siamo tutti molto più attenti al contenuto anche etico di ciò che compriamo.  A tale riguardo mi permetto di citare Carter C. (2014),” Market to someone who cares: the millennials.”, Retailer Now, March 1, http://retailernowmag.com/market-to-someone-who-cares-the-millennials, perchè la sua definizione di millennials consapevoli e che cercano eticità è davvero perfetta:“Millennials, the young adults born since the early 1980s, are the newest generation of gem and jewelry consumers. Studies show that this generation is particularly inclined to take factors such as fair trade status, sustainability, and human rights into account before making a purchase . As a generation, they consider their purchase a personal investment in a brand that represents their own values, and they are a force to be reckoned with”.

Anch’io personalmente mi ritrovo in questa categoria.

Per quanto riguarda l’estrazione delle materie prime della gioielleria, il problema non riguarda solo le guerre, i soldi usati per comprare armi, ma bisogna pensare anche e soprattutto alle condizioni di sfruttamento in cui lavorano queste persone, alle loro condizioni di salute precarie a causa del loro lavoro, così come non è da sottovalutare l’inquinamento ambientale legato al disboscamento e all’impiego di sostanze chimiche.

Vi voglio, inoltre, consigliare la lettura del libro “Making Trouble: Fighting for Fair Trade Jewellery” di Greg Valerio un pioniere nel settore del Ethical Jewellery, che ha detto: “Jewellery is worn to beautify. There is no beauty in exploitation“. Frase stupenda con cui concordo perfettamente.

Esistono diversi aspetti a cui dobbiamo stare attenti quando compriamo un gioiello, affinchè il nostro acquisto possa essere considerato etico.

Qui di seguito riporto le diciture più comuni a cui prestare attenzione:

1. Tracciabilità delle miniere: dobbiamo assicurarci che la pietra che stiamo comprando non provenga da un paese in guerra.
2. Fair Trade è un certificato che garantisce che il commercio sia avvenuto in modo solidale, senza sfruttare nessuno.
3. CSR, Corporated Social Responsability, in questo caso le aziende hanno deciso di porsi degli obbiettivi CRS, hanno quindi deciso di migliorare la vita dei loro dipendenti.

Possiamo, inoltre, fare un’altra distinzione a seconda della materia prima in oggetto:

1. Per quanto riguarda i diamanti esiste un certificato dato ai diamanti estratti dai paesi che aderiscono al Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
2. Per quanto riguarda le pietre di colore conviene informarsi sulla miniera di provenienza, meglio se proveniente da piccole miniere o da commercio fair trade o da aziende che seguono CSR.
3. Fairmined gold è un certificato che garantisce la provenienza dell’oro da artigiani responsabili e da organizzazioni di piccole miniere che lavorano seguendo le norme di buona responsabilità.

Quindi ricapitolando per cercare di comprare gioielli eticamente corretti bisogna sempre chiedersi la provenienza, se sono dotati di certificati, se corrispondono ai criteri Fair Trade o se la politica dell’azienda segue CSR.

Sempre più aziende seguono la filosofia dell’Ethical Jewellery.

Infine volevo ricordavi che quest’anno l’oro del premio Nobel per la Pace è stato prodotto da due cooperative Fairmined-certified della Colombia: dimostrazione del fatto che la sensibilità verso questo tema sta aumentando.

Ad oggi per riassumere posso dire che non basta più la tracciabilità della materia prima, ovvero che provenga da paesi non in guerra, ma bisogna anche pensare all’ecosostenibilità delle miniere e della produzione di materiali, così come al benessere dei soggetti coinvolti.

Comprare questi gioielli non comporta quasi mai dovere affrontare una spesa maggiore, ma  cercando l’eticità e andando contro l’espoliazione, si guadagna sempre.

Il mondo della gioielleria dovrebbe semplicemente essere un mondo stupendo e sfavillante senza lati oscuri.

Today I want to deal with a more serious issue: the Ethical Jewellery.

The new trend is the Ethical Jewellery, which fortunately is becoming increasingly common.

Anyone, especially after the homonym film released in 2006, when we talk about Ethical Jewellery immediately think about Blood Diamonds. I think today all buyers are aware and careful regarding the purchase of diamonds: they look for certified diamonds. But I don’t know how many will ask about the ethics of gold and precious stones source.

Lately I have read several articles and I’m really passionate about the ” Ethical Jewellery ” topic. You should know that in the past I studied Bioethics, so I’m returning to my old studies! 🙂

As for the extraction of jewellery raw materials, the problem is not just about wars, the money used to buy weapons, but we must also think about the exploitation conditions in which these people work, their poor health conditions because of their work, as well as it is not to underestimate the environmental pollution linked to deforestation and the use of chemicals.

I want also to suggest you the the book  “Making Trouble: Fighting for Fair Trade Jewellery” by Greg Valerio un a pioneer in the Ethical Jewellery field, who said: “Jewellery is worn to beautify. There is no beauty in exploitation“. Wonderful sentence with which I fully agree.

There are several aspects about we should be careful when we buy a jewel,so that our purchase can be considered ethical.

Here I report the most common wording to watch out:

1. Mines’ Traceability: we have to ensure that the stone we are buying does not come from a war country.
2. Fair Trade is a certificate that guarantee that trade took place with fairness, without exploiting anyone.
3. CSR, Corporated Social Responsability, in this case the companies decided to set CRS goals, namely to improve the their employees’ lives.

We can also make another distinction according to the raw material in question:

1. As for the diamonds there is a certificate given to diamonds mined in the countries participating at the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
2. As for the colored stones you should inquire about the mine of origin, preferably get from small mines or fair trade or from companies that follow CSR.
3. Fairmined gold is a certificate that guarantees the gold provenance by artisans and managers of small mining organizations working according to  good rules of responsibility.

So in summary trying to buy ethically correct jewellery, you should always ask for their origin, if they are certificated, they fit the Fair Trade criteria or if the company follows CSR policy. More and more companies follow the Ethical Jewellery philosophy.

To date to summarize I can say that the traceability of the raw material, originating from no war countries, is not enough, but we have also to think about eco-sustainability of the mining and production of materials, as well as about the welfare of those involved.

Buying these jewels doesn’t mean spending more, but looking for the ethics and going against the exploitation, you always will benefit from it.

The world of jewellery should simply be a beautiful sparkling world with no dark side.
